No matter where you go, you always take yourself with you

I traveled, I lived in different countries, I moved with nothing but a small suitcase, and let me tell you - travel has been romanticized beyond all reason as some magical cure for all your mental issues. Eat, pray, love, anyone?

It’s not entirely wrong. I am a huge believer that travel is great for everyone and you should absolutely go see the world, if that’s possible for you. Nothing expands the mind and teaches acceptance quite like seeing the vast variety of human experience.

BUT the sheer change in location does not cure you of your demons. It might feel like it short-term, so long as you keep filling your days with exciting activities and beautiful views, but if you stay long enough and allow yourself to slow down the unhealed part of your soul will start aching again even if you are in Rome.

No matter where you go, you always bring yourself with you. If your issue was purely external (abusive partner, for example), then sure - move and be happy, baby! But if you’re running away from depression… you’ll keep running until you don’t have the strength to do even that.

Tip from someone who used to run a lot and still defaults to running away when shit hits the fan (I try not to) - use your travels as a resource.

Take that joy, that motivation, that energy, and pour it into your inner healing. It’s not a magic pill, it’s a nourishing meal that would allow you to walk the distance. But you still have to do the walking yourself.
